Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is the most efficient and effective method for ground fighting of all the martial arts. The most important element of BJJ that separates it from it's Japanese counterpart is it's effective use of positional dominance over the opponent. A BJJ stylist will use various positions to control their opponent while applying locks, chokes or strikes. In traditional sport Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a kimono (gi) is worn. The kimono serves more as a tool than a uniform. The kimono is constructed of very thick material which is resistant to tearing and allows the BJJ player to utilize it as a means to control the opponent. It also allows for use of various "cloth chokes". These chokes using the collar, lapel and sleeves of the kimono, translate very well
SUBMISSION GRAPPLING
This art utilizes techniques from BJJ as well as western forms of wrestling and other ground fighting arts. In this sport a traditional uniform is not worn. Typically, a player will wear tight fitting, sport specific clothing that will minimize one's ability to use the clothing as a "tool" to control or submit an opponent. Submission grappling is growing into a very popular competitive sport here in the U.S. As with BJJ, the techniques from this sport translate very well to self defense situations.
